In May 2026, OpenAI shipped desktop pets inside Codex. You type /hatch and a small animated creature appears on your screen. It watches while the agent works, fidgets when it is waiting on you, and celebrates when a task finishes. It is a status indicator wearing a costume, and it turned out people love status indicators wearing costumes.
Within weeks there was a mod scene. Community galleries filled up with custom pets: meme cats, tiny knights, spinning things, anime creatures. None of it was planned by OpenAI. The pets became the most personal part of a product that is otherwise a terminal.
the crab that went to the wrong lab
Somewhere in that first wave, someone asked ChatGPT to invent original pet ideas for the feature. Its first suggestion was a small orange crab that faces your screen while code is being written and raises its claws when the job is done. The crab already had a name, and the name was the other lab's mascot.

The eggs do not reveal on mint. They hatch when Codex makes news. A model release cracks shells. The collection's reveal schedule is written by OpenAI's shipping schedule, which feels like the only correct way to hatch a Codex pet.
