the five pixel pets gathered around a glowing CRT at night beside a nest of eggs

In May 2026, OpenAI shipped desktop pets inside Codex. You type /hatch and a small animated creature appears on your screen. It watches while the agent works, fidgets when it is waiting on you, and celebrates when a task finishes. It is a status indicator wearing a costume, and it turned out people love status indicators wearing costumes.

Within weeks there was a mod scene. Community galleries filled up with custom pets: meme cats, tiny knights, spinning things, anime creatures. None of it was planned by OpenAI. The pets became the most personal part of a product that is otherwise a terminal.

These are the eggs Codex should have hatched instead: 4,000 of them on Solana, priced in $HATCH, paired against $OPENAI PreStocks. The rest of the story is in lore.txt.
